An occasional playlist and accompanying newsletter.

Details

I like music, and I like sharing music with other people. To give me an excuse to do this, I publish an occasional Spotify playlist and accompanying newsletter walking through the song choices.

Whilst much of the content is from the 70s, 80s and 90s, they include anything from the 1950s to nowadays over a wide range of genres.

The playlists, and thus the newsletter, follow this rough structure:

  • Opening out - starting off with a handful of unrelated songs that I like.
  • Special feature(s) - see below
  • The Middle - More songs I like.
  • Special feature(s)
  • Finally - Big finish!

Special features are some of the following:

  • Even better than the real thing - covers, remixes and samples.
  • Focus - A deeper dive into one particular area of music.
  • Not on Spotify - Songs you can’t get on Spotify. These won't be on the playlist for obvious reasons, but I'll link out to a version elsewhere.
  • Big in Japan - Songs that only charted outside of the UK.
  • 1-2-3 - Three songs with a common theme.
  • Somethin' Else - Lesser-known songs, particularly (but not exclusively) by artists famous for one big hit.
  • All killer, no filler - Recommended albums. I won't include the album's songs in the playlist, because that'd be weird, but I'll link to the full thing.

Use the form below to get the newsletters by email. Each one will include a link to the playlist and a walkthrough of the songs/features.

The emails also include a link to an "embedded" version of the playlist, which allows tracks to be previewed without a Spotify account.

Past newsletters and playlists

  1. Vince Clarke, Letters to Cleo, and songs that tell a story.
  2. Toots & the Maytals, PRIZM, and the recipe for Memphis Soul Stew!
